Book Review: Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh

Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Publisher:  DAW

Summary:  The first book in C.J. Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreignerbegins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race.

From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

I really liked this but I'm not surprised as I'm a Cherryh fan (Downbelow Station is a favorite of mine). It did take me a bit to get into the atevi words and read them in seamless flow but I liked the challenge. I think it helped give me an appreciation of the characters and setting as they were still trying to get to know one another and relate. It made for a slower go initially but I liked the story and definitely intend on continuing with the series.
